Respect Day is a joint day of action organized by Munich’s art colleges: the University of Television and Film Munich (HFF), the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts (HMTM), the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München (AdBK), and the Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding. It advocates for a respectful, supportive and sustainable working environment in academic studies, teaching, and artistry.
This year’s event is being hosted by the HFF in cooperation with FOFS. Titled “Whose Gaze? – Art, Power, and the Act of Seeing,” it will focus on how discriminatory and often intrusive representational conventions can be recognized, critically examined, and artistically overcome. The key question is: Whose gaze shapes our view of the world — and how can it be changed?
Panel discussion: “Whose Gaze? Between Artistic Freedom and Responsibility – Where Does Power End?”
Who decides who is seen — and how? The “Whose Gaze?” panel discussion will discuss power, gaze, and responsibility in cinema and visual forms of culture. Navigating the tension between artistic freedom, representation, and institutional responsibility, the discussion will explore how perspectives emerge, who shapes them, and what a conscious approach to power dynamics might look like.
Speakers: Dr. Sezgin Inceel, Marley Schlarb, Paula Poprawa, Prof. Sinje Gebauer, Sara Sommerfeldt, Stella Deborah Traub

“Flashing Glances”: Screening of short films
These short films by HFF students seek out and discover perspectives far removed from conventional narratives. They are guided by the gazes of their protagonists — at the world, at the person opposite them, and at themselves. This makes their reality tangible — and turns power dynamics upside down.
